As the first quarter of 2017 is coming to an end I reflect upon how just a short time ago my wife and I were awaiting the birth of our first child, and now our daughter is three months old. We await for things in life with anticipation, and then we blink, and then they’ve passed. This makes me stop and think about the different relationships in my life. Am I paying attention to them or are they just flying by?
We have many different types of relationships in our lives and I started to think about my current business relationships. Whether it be with contractors, subcontractors, suppliers or employees and bosses. We spend as much time with these people, in many cases, as we do our families. So do we stop and think about how we might be paying attention to them?
What the hard times in past years have taught me is that we need to be constantly thinking about our relationships. Communicating with each other the good and bad and looking for ways to continue to cultivate business. Are we thanking people for good work, appreciating a subcontractor going the extra mile to complete a job on time even though they weren’t given a complete area to work? It’s usually when we are the busiest that we lose sight of those that we will need to maintain our businesses during the slow times.
I encourage each and every one of you to think about your current relationships and look for easy ways to improve, develop and prosper from them. One way to develop new relationships and strengthen existing is to join us in April at our Bay Area Remodeling Awards where we will be showcasing our members and their award winning projects. The Awards Ccommittee has done an amazing job working with our media sponsor Interiors Magazine to create an event you won’t forget. I look forward to seeing you and celebrating your amazing projects.

Heads Up! A California Civil Code Section 1542 Waiver May Be Lurking!
Occasionally when one writes a law column one must actually discuss the law.
Recently I was reviewing an insurance release from a contractor client. It was not something relating to a case - just routine paperwork that popped up as part of the payment protocol.
This simple insurance document contained a “Section1542 waiver” – the emphasis on “waiver” is mine. This is a waiver of known and unknown claims. Click here for full article
